In life, there are common beliefs and unspoken rules that most people abide (and live) by, but in the world of makeup, many of these rules are unfounded. I’m here to separate fact from fiction for the makeup myths we are tired of hearing!
Myth #1: Women with mature skin should wear “more” makeup.
True/False: FALSE
As women age, the laughter and tears they’ve expressed in life start to show via fine lines and wrinkles. In this situation, less is more! Keep your makeup routine simple and limited to: light foundation, cream blush and bronzer (if you want), mascara, eye shadow, brow powder and lipstick And stay away from powder unless it is a very light translucent powder, as it can accentuate lines on the face. I highly recommend the Urban Decay Naked Foundation, as it gives the right amount of coverage without the cakey finish.
Myth #2: You can’t wear sparkly makeup as “an adult”.
True/False: FALSE
OK, so maybe “glitter” isn’t the best choice if someone desires a more natural look, however, a shimmery finish or slight sparkle in the eye shadow is definitely flattering as it adds dimension to the eyes and makes them pop. I’ve had 30-year-olds tell me they don’t wear shimmery eye shadow because they’re “past the age.” I say do what makes you happy! My favorite luster shadows are Giorgio Armani Eye Tints, and YSL Full Metal Shadow as they give luster without the glitter overload.
Myth #3: Test out foundation color on the wrist.
True/False: FALSE
The wrist is one of the lightest places on the body, therefore it’s not exactly an accurate match for your foundation. (Unless you are naturally very pale and your wrist is the exact shade of your chest and face). Try matching to another part of the body like the top side of your arm or jaw line.
Myth #4: Certain eye shadow shades only look good on specific eye colors.
True/False: FALSE
While some shades, indeed, do make certain eye colors pop, you can’t really go wrong in a color selection. I would say that things most likely go wrong in the application and blending process.
Myth #5: Always wash your face before you sleep.
True/False: TRUE
Your skin regenerates the most when you are sleeping. If you are wearing makeup, not only are you clogging your pores, but the regeneration process is also halted, causing accelerated aging and unhealthy skin! Myth #6: Throw your mascara out after three months.
True/False: TRUE
Eyelash mites (yup they’re a thing) are attracted to old mascara and can actually start living in the formula. When these mites land on your lashes, they need to eat, so they start chomping away at the lashes, leaving hair shorter and more brittle. If this doesn’t get you to throw your mascara away after three months, I don’t know what will!
Myth #7: Sharing lipstick, lip gloss, mascara and eyeliner, is A-OK!
True/False: FALSE
Bacteria spreads so easily between cosmetics, that in order to keep yourself healthy and clean, one should not share cosmetics with another. For day-to-day use, it is best to keep your makeup to yourself!
Myth #8: Oily skin types don’t need moisturizer.
True/False: FALSE
Oily skin absolutely needs moisture. Otherwise, the oil productivity will increase, and create excess oil. Using an oil-free moisturizer is the best way to go when dealing with this skin type. Try La Roche-Posay Effaclar K for hydration without the greasy, oily finish.
